Group Sessions for Songwriters

Publishing houses and full time songwriters typically wait until they have 5 to 10 songs ready before they arrange a demo session. They go to a big studio with professional recording equipment and multiple isolation booths. They hire a full band of top session players, a great engineer and spend the whole day in the studio recording tracks and vocals, and mixing.

But most of us don’t want to wait until we have 5 or more songs finished. We want to get our newest creation recorded and out there to the world as soon as possible. Most of us also can’t afford that level of demo session all on our own. That used to mean going to a small studio where one musician may act as producer, engineer and guitar player (or more), or a “mail order” demo service to get an affordable recording of a single song.

So what’s different about doing your demos with Kim Copeland Productions?

Kim schedules and runs her group recording sessions just like the hit writers do. However, she allows several songwriters to share the experience and the cost. She hires a minimum of 5 top session players including drums, bass, keys, electric guitar and acoustic guitar. All players are in the studio at the same time working together to create a great, signature sound for your song. Kim never stacks parts (records just rhythm tracks and brings in the lead instruments at a later date).

Why? Because she knows the importance of having the “whole team” there at recording time, using their creativity and expertise to bring your song to life.

As a group, the musicians listen to a rough “work tape” recording provided by the songwriter (Kim can also help create the work tape if you are unable) and discuss the key aspects of the song, (attitude, tempo, drum fills and groove, arrangement and instrumentation) while reading down the Nashville number chart provided by Kim. They then play through the song a few times and record the music tracks, including overdubs to make the song sound full and interesting (basically like a record.) Even though there may be only five musicians in the room, you may have eight or nine musical tracks on your final recording.

Kim also uses a vocalist to sing a scratch vocal during the recording process so that the musicians can build the musical track around the vocal. If she determines that a bar of music needs to be added to enhance the vocal line, that change is made on the spot with a simple chart correction and everyone records from the new and improved arrangement.

As a singer/songwriter, trained vocal coach and artist development specialist, Kim is acutely aware that you are pitching your demos to artists (i.e. singers), not guitar players or drummers. Therefore, she takes great care to cast the vocalists for each song to match the essence of the song and the pitch market you are aiming for; to get a great emotional delivery from the vocalist (not just good singing); and to place the vocal in the mix accordingly.

With Kim, you get the skill and experience of a producer whose sole focus is capturing the essence of your song and presenting it in the best way to help you achieve success. She surrounds you with top musicians and vocalists for an awesome studio experience.

Kim is your ticket to recording like the pros because she is a pro. She uses the same players, equipment, engineers, singers and studio that they use, giving you a first class experience and recording.
